The Haven VA/ CE Methodist Primary School Governors
Mrs Nicky Soars ~ Chair of Governors
I now have two children at the Haven, my eldest is now at senior school.I think it is the best school there is! Before I had children I used to work for a Private Bank where I looked after very rich clients who had at least £500,000 available to invest (that would buy a lot of chocolate!). Our job was to buy stocks and shares and other investments (sometimes fine wines) and hopefully make their money grow! After working in London I then travelled around the country training and coaching staff on all sorts of things they might need to know to look after clients and investments.
I joined the board of Governors at The Haven School in October 2011. and was vice chair of the Governing Board for 4 years before becoming Chair in September 2016. We help look after the staffing and the finances of the school. Another role I have is being Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Governor, ensuring that we make teaching accessible to all pupils and that every area of need is identified and supported. I have previously been a Trustee & Chair of a church trust and also Vice Chair & Chair of a voluntary organisation.
As Governors we like to ensure that we are up to date with training and I have done lots of interesting courses such as: Learning about school finance (introduction), Parental engagement project, Pupil premium (training on how best to use the money we receive for Free school meals), Safeguarding and Promoting Pupil Welfare, Preparing for Ofsted, Special educational needs and disabilities (preparing our school for changes in provision) and Safer recruitment training. We always welcome feedback of any kind from parents, pupils, staff and local community so please if you do have anything you would like to share or discuss with us please drop a note into the school office and it will be passed on to the Governors to deal with appropriately.
Mr Vaughan Schulze ~ Acting Vice Chair
I was born and educated in South Africa. I moved to Eastbourne in 1971 when I took up a Physics teaching post at Eastbourne College. After 6 years there, 2 as a Housemaster, I moved to Moira House Girls School, where I taught Physics, Maths and RE. For the last 12 years there, until 2005 when I retired, I was Head of Science. In that position I was responsible for the science budget. I have been been married to Jane for 45 years and have 2 married daughters and 5 grandchildren. I attend All Saints' C of E Church where I am volunteer-Caretaker and helped with the sound desk. I am an evening service Warden. I enjoy reading, the Bible, walking, cycling, Scrabble and tennis. I am also treasurer of a local Christian charity for Elderly People.
I have been a school governor at The Haven School for 10 years. For 8 years I served as Chair of Governors. During this time the school has doubled in size and has had a new Nursery School built on site, run by a separate provider. The school has been graded "Good" at our last two Ofsteds in in 2011 and 2014. I helped our Clerk gain the top qualification in The East Sussex Clerking Service for which the school was one of the first to join in 2011.
While on the governing body at The Haven School I have served on the Personnel, Admissions (Chair) and Pay committees (Chair) and the new Leadership and Management committees. Over the years I have attended a great variety of training courses to help improve my understanding of the role of school governors. Such courses include: 'Taking the Chair', 'Being an Effective Chair', 'Preparing for Ofsted', 'Safeguarding', 'Headteacher Performance Management', 'Introduction to School Finance'. I try to keep as up-to-date as possible with all the changes that take place in the primary education system. I regard my main role as supporting and challenging the Head Teacher and the Senior Leadership Team

I retired back to Eastbourne in 2007 and have enjoyed my role as a Foundation Governor in this fine school over the last eight years.
Mrs Carol Harrison ~ Foundation Governor
We retired to Eastbourne four years ago. I grew up in the Isle of Man and having spent all my working life in various cities, it is good to be back by the sea. I have a background of working in mainstream and special needs primary schools, latterly in London. My first impression of the Haven is that it's motto "God in all we do" is the foundation of a lot of hard work and fun. I am looking forward to learning more.
Mrs Hilary Walshe ~ Foundation Governor (Methodist Church)

During my career I also attained a degree in Management and was a member of the Chartered Management Institute. My most recent role saw me responsible for 23 offices, all staff and their work therein, spread across Kent, Sussex and parts of Surrey & Hampshire.
Now retired it is a blessing to have time to dedicate to helping children in their quest to reach their full potential and a privilege to be a Governor at a school that truly lives up to its motto 'God in all we do'

After graduating from Bristol University and being admitted as a solicitor I practised in London between 1972 and 1987 before moving to Eastbourne with my wife and two daughters. From 1987 until 2011 I continued in practice as a solicitor with a local firm, retiring in 2011. I was privileged in that time to serve as a trustee of Tear Fund and subsequently as a trustee of Compassion UK Christian Child Development whose main work in a nutshell is ‘the relief of children from poverty in Jesus’ name’ fulfilled mainly by the sponsorship of children in a number of countries around the world.
My wife and I attend All Saints Church Eastbourne where we both serve as Readers. We also play a regular part in the life of our five children.
I became a Governor of The Haven in September 2016 and my hope is that I will help to maintain the high standards at The Haven School and preserve its christian ethos.
Sarah Owen ~ Foundation Governor
I have recently moved to Eastbourne having lived in South East London for over 25 years. During that time I worked as a teacher and manager at a large primary school in Thamesmead. Latterly I was Assistant Head Teacher and Inclusion Manager and I was responsible for Safeguarding and Special Education Needs as well as line managing a team of over 35 support staff.
My husband was a vicar in the Church of England for over 40 years and since retiring to Eastbourne we have been attending All Saints Church. We have three children (who are all teachers!) and three granddaughters. I have regular ‘Grannie’ days.
I have been a governor at the Haven for just over a year and am part of the Ethos Working Group and am the governor responsible for Safeguarding. Having always worked in a Local Authority school it is great to be involved in a school community with such a distinctive Christian ethos.
