The Haven VA CE/Methodist
Primary School Governors
Mrs N Soars ~ Co-Chair of Governors
I am married to Ian and we have three daughters, a dog and two rabbits. My girls enjoyed many happy years at the Haven and are now at senior school. Before I had children I used to work for a Private Bank where I looked after very rich clients who had at least £500,000 available to invest (now that would buy a lot of chocolate!). Our job was to buy stocks and shares and other investments (sometimes fine wines) and hopefully make their money grow! After working in London I then travelled around the country training and coaching staff on all sorts of things they might need to know to look after clients and investments.
I joined the board of Governors at The Haven School in October 2011 and was vice chair of the Governing Board for 4 years before becoming Chair in September 2016. I was previously a Trustee & Chair of a church trust and also Vice Chair & Chair of a voluntary organisation.
There is always something new going on each year and it is important Governors are up to date; thankfully we have access to great training. My most recent training has been about GDPR (changes in how we look after data and information), safeguarding (keeping everyone in school safe) and governor succession planning (looking ahead to make sure we have enough governors to support the school).
Governors are always delighted to see the children and staff as we come in to school for meetings, classrooms visits and worship assemblies and so we get to hear a lot of the exiting things that are going on at the Haven. We also see many parents at school productions, summer fairs, carol concerts and other events throughout the year too. If there is anything you would like to share with governors (feedback of any kind from parents, pupils, staff and local community) please drop a note into the school office and it will be passed on to the Governors to deal with appropriately.
Mrs H Walshe ~ Co-Chair of Governors ~ Foundation Governor Methodist Church
I am a lifelong Methodist and a member of Greenfield Methodist Church.

During my career I also attained a degree in Management and was a member of the Chartered Management Institute. My most recent role saw me responsible for 23 offices, all staff and their work therein, spread across Kent, Sussex and parts of Surrey & Hampshire.
Now retired it is a blessing to have time to dedicate to helping children in their quest to reach their full potential and a privilege to be a Governor at a school that truly lives up to its motto 'God in all we do'
Mr V Schulze ~ Foundation Governor
I was born and educated in South Africa. I moved to Eastbourne in 1971 when I took up a Physics teaching post at Eastbourne College. After 6 years there, 2 as a Housemaster, I moved to Moira House Girls School, where I taught Physics, Maths and RE. For the last 12 years there, until 2005 when I retired, I was Head of Science. In that position I was responsible for the science budget. I have been been married to Jane for 45 years and have 2 married daughters and 5 grandchildren. I attend All Saints' C of E Church where I am volunteer-Caretaker and helped with the sound desk. I am an evening service Warden. I enjoy reading, the Bible, walking, cycling, Scrabble and tennis. I am also treasurer of a local Christian charity for Elderly People.
I have been a school governor at The Haven School for 10 years. For 8 years I served as Chair of Governors. During this time the school has doubled in size and has had a new Nursery School built on site, run by a separate provider. The school has been graded "Good" at our last two Ofsteds in in 2011 and 2014. I helped our Clerk gain the top qualification in The East Sussex Clerking Service for which the school was one of the first to join in 2011.
While on the governing body at The Haven School I have served on the Personnel, Admissions (Chair) and Pay committees (Chair) and the new Leadership and Management committees. Over the years I have attended a great variety of training courses to help improve my understanding of the role of school governors. Such courses include: 'Taking the Chair', 'Being an Effective Chair', 'Preparing for Ofsted', 'Safeguarding', 'Headteacher Performance Management', 'Introduction to School Finance'. I try to keep as up-to-date as possible with all the changes that take place in the primary education system. I regard my main role as supporting and challenging the Head Teacher and the Senior Leadership Team

Mr I Gardner ~ Foundation Governor
After graduating from Bristol University and being admitted as a solicitor I practiced in London between 1972 and 1987 before moving to Eastbourne with my wife and two daughters. From 1987 until 2011 I continued in practice as a solicitor with a local firm, retiring in 2011. I was privileged in that time to serve as a trustee of Tear Fund and subsequently as a trustee of Compassion UK Christian Child Development whose main work in a nutshell is ‘the relief of children from poverty in Jesus’ name’ fulfilled mainly by the sponsorship of children in a number of countries around the world.
My wife and I attend All Saints Church Eastbourne where we both serve as Readers. We also play a regular part in the life of our five children.
I became a Governor of The Haven in September 2016 and my hope is that I will help to maintain the high standards at The Haven School and preserve its christian ethos.
Mrs S Owen ~ Foundation Governor
I have recently moved to Eastbourne having lived in South East London for over 25 years. During that time I worked as a teacher and manager at a large primary school in Thamesmead. Latterly I was Assistant Head Teacher and Inclusion Manager and I was responsible for Safeguarding and Special Education Needs as well as line managing a team of over 35 support staff.
My husband was a vicar in the Church of England for over 40 years and since retiring to Eastbourne we have been attending All Saints Church. We have three children (who are all teachers!) and three granddaughters. I have regular ‘Grannie’ days.
I have been a governor at the Haven for just over a year and am part of the Ethos Working Group and am the governor responsible for Safeguarding. Having always worked in a Local Authority school it is great to be involved in a school community with such a distinctive Christian ethos.
Mrs J Trott ~ Staff Governor
Mr N Jewell ~ Governor

Mrs J Frost ~ Governor
Born and raised in Barnet, North London, I moved to the Midlands after getting married in 1970 and lived there for twenty five years. During my time there, I worked for a total of five years in school administration at a secondary school in Uppingham, Rutland and at the public school in Stamford, Lincolnshire. Two years after moving south to Eastbourne in 1995 I became Office Manager/Bursar of Langney Primary School for nine years and from there moved to be School Business Manager of Highfield Junior School (now Heron Park Academy) until I retired in 2011. After retiring I volunteered at Shinewater Primary School listening to children read until my appointment as an Exams Invigilator for Ringmer Community College (2014 -17).
A committed Christian and member of the Church of England since my early twenties, I have always taken an active role in church life. My husband and I currently worship at St Mary’s, Willingdon.
Our two children, a daughter and son, live locally and between them have given us five wonderful grandchildren ranging in ages from 8 – 24.
Alongside my employment I studied part-time with the Open University for six years (2000-2005) and, graduated in 2006 with a 2:1 BA Hons (Open) and a Diploma in Religious Studies.
Art and music (especially singing) have been my great loves since childhood and I spend as much of my leisure time as possible painting, drawing, sewing, knitting, crocheting and practicing my electric piano, guitar and clarinet!
In terms of work and life experience I believe I have much to offer The Haven and am really looking forward to contributing to and supporting such a clearly excellent school in terms of ethos, Governing Body, Headteacher and Staff.
Mr N Bastin ~ Governor
I have lived in Eastbourne all my life and met my wife at St Aidan’s Methodist Church, where we later married 40 years ago. We both were youth leaders and Sunday School teachers. We now attend Emmanuel church. We have 2 children and 4 grandchildren, one of whom attends The Haven.
I have worked for the Ambulance service locally for 40 years mainly as a Paramedic and have been in a management role for the past 15 years.
When our children were at Ocklynge School I became a governor there which I did for 24 years, including 8 years as chair. During this time I was asked to be a transitional governor of The Haven, which meant starting the school from a vacant site until it opened, setting up the schools ethos and policies.
I feel privileged that I have the opportunity to be a governor of the school and will be there to support the school and parents in fulfilling each individual pupils potential.
